What is preservation?
"Not everyone agrees that museum commissioning of new media art is a good idea. Should museums be involved with the newest, most cutting edge art? "
I'm focusing on the environments in which artists display their final piece. I am trying to bring awareness to artists that there are multiple environments to display artwork. The familiar museum environment is good but I believe we can expand as new media artists. We are used to seeing traditional artwork hung on a blank white wall in a museum but what if we could see art displayed somewhere different? Would the significant still be the same? What would that piece convey that it didn't before? Artists who are aware of their surroundings can broaden their art creativity and bring new media art to a new level. Making a different perception on the way we view art can enhance new media art.

The subjects in the BYOB artist event were very wide ranged projection pieces. Artists displayed a digital museum of pieces maintained by themselves that made the artists recognize the importance of distribution and many more concepts. This ‘public art’ was planned with the artists specific directions of display. That is important to digital art because there are so many options of representation. Years ago, this would not have been as easily distributed as it was on November 12th, 2014 and that is why environmental awareness and preparation is important. People are naturally drawn to the environment something is in and in the article, Toward Environmental Criticism by Malcolm McCullough he explains the significance environment has on artists.
Toward Environmental Criticism by Malcolm McCullough talked about environmental awareness, patterns of living, and how people take care of things and places that they value aesthetically. The BYOB event strongly relates to these topics because environment was a big aspect in the event, prematurely picking a projection area complimenting the art piece. The museum-like environment displayed art works that could have been displayed anywhere. The artists valued their pieces and believed a museum-based environment would enhance their digital pieces and be more visually pleasing. These trends create communications from the artist, to the artwork, to the viewer. Environment is defiantly something that fascinates artists and their projection ideas. As time goes on, environment alterations occur and people become more aware of that, reflecting on their personal lives.
Presentation process was a huge aspect to the BYOB event. Things like lighting, shadow, background, and motion effects had to all be thought out before the final presentation. These pieces can be replayed, reinstalled, and altered all because it is digital. Making the piece as attractive as possible is important to the artist and as in Malcolm McCullough's article, artists will make sure their piece is as aesthetically pleasing occurring to the chosen environment. This event made the artists and viewers more aware of space and digital distributions. This event was implied for those reasons and changes the way we talk about art because digital art is uncommonly displayed like the BYOB event was. For my personal work, the event helped me with discourse ideas/broadened my options.
